December 10, 2000 - Tahoe - Castle Rock

Castle Rock is a large rock outcropping 1 mile north of 436 Barrett Drive that is visible from most of the Tahoe basin.
Since the rock is visible from most of the basin, one might infer that most of the Tahoe basin is visible from Castle Rock.
Given that inference, one might consider going there to see the view.

It was a gray windy day at Castle Rock. A storm was blowing in.
We had some good sledding at the foot of Castle Rock.
My fingers were getting numb during the descent from Castle Rock.
Bart looked like spiderman up there.

Castle Rock is a 1 mile hike north on a National Forest trail that departs from Barrett Drive.
You will find great hiking and cross country skiing on this trail as well as great sledding at the foot of Castle Rock.

Getting to Castle Rock is easy:
Walk 3 blocks uphill on Barrett Drive to the corner of Barrett Drive and Maryanne Drive.
Turn left on Maryanne Drive and walk off the end of Maryanne Drive onto a trail.
Follow the trail 400 meters to the right (north) around a hill on the right.
Cross the creek on the left, and head 50 meters uphill to another trail.
Turn left on this trail and follow it 300 meters to a fork.
Turn left at the fork, and walk 200 meters up to Castle Rock.
Walk around the right (north) side of Castle Rock, and climb the lower rock outcrop.
Avoid climbing the higher outcrop, unless you are an experienced climber.
If you go straight at the fork past Castle Rock, you can follow the trail 200 meters to the Tahoe Rim Trail.
